Description
Egypt, Roman Period, ca. 100 BCE to 100 CE. A sensitively modeled head of a youth wearing a hooded garment whose sculptor was clearly gifted with an ability to render flesh and fabric from marble. Notice how the drapery gracefully billows over the child's head, how those intricate curls frame the forehead, and how that tranquil visage is carefully delineated with remarkably naturalistic features: generously lidded almond-shaped eyes, an aquiline nose, full bow-shaped lips, petite ears, and a soft rounded chin. Custom stand. Size: 2.375" W x 4.125" H (6 cm x 10.5 cm)
The realistic proportions of this face suggest that this sculptor revered mathematically based proportions in his figures, much like the revered Greek sculptor Polykleitos who purportedly said, "Perfection comes about little by little through many numbers". Notice the attention to even the smallest details, i.e. the precise delineation of each lock of hair on this the figure's head.
Provenance: Ex-private Hagar Collection
