Description
Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, ca. 300 to 600 CE. Who but "hoo" created this remarkable silver owl amulet? Why, the Moche of course! This lovely hollow, cast silver owl head is beautifully rendered with a keen attention to detail. Just look at those mesmerizing eyes comprised of concentric circles surrounding pierced pupils, the ridges marking the arch of its pointy, long beak, and the feathers bordering the entire visage. A wonderful example that was likely part of a chest ornament. What's more, the iconography is very symbolic, as owls were revered as the creatures who carried the sun to insure it always rose in the morning. Pierced from top to bottom for attachment. Weight: 13.6 grams Size: 1.5" L x 1.625" W x 1.625" H (3.8 cm x 4.1 cm x 4.1 cm)
