A LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE RUSSIAN EMBROIDERED TAPESTRY, PROBABLY ELENA POLENOVA, CIRCA 1895. The large and imposing tapestry embroidered on the lower section with peacocks and beneath a trellis of scrolling flowers and vines. Verso with Hammer Galleries label, circa 1930's. 123 inches x 79 inches (312.5 x 201 cm).
The offered panel clearly shows design elements known to have been executed by Elena Dmitrievna Polenova (1850 - 1898) and it is very possible that it was executed at the Solomenko workshops under her guidance. Surviving examples, such as the offered lot, are rare.
