Description
1634 Denis Petau Rationarium Temporum Catholic Philosophy Pope Gregory Martyrdom
Denis Petau was considered, even during his lifetime, one of the most brilliant minds. He sought to improve upon and carry on the works of Joseph Justus Scaliger. This was achieved bin 1627 with the publication of ‘Opus de doctrina temporum,’ which was abridged as “Rationarum Temporum” later. This work ended up becoming more popular than Scaliger’s “De Emendatione” which covers similar topics. “Rationarum” depicts historical figures and ideas, both philosophical and religious doctrine. Petau writes about Pope Gregory the Great and his “most famous, illuminated death, up of martyrdom” (p. 351). According to the Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church, this work is “a fundamental contribution to the study of ancient chronology.
