Description
MERCATOR, Gerard. Leaf from the Mercator-Hondius World Atlas. Stone & Lorson, 1985. With an original leaf from the 1619 edition. Small folio, Full stiff vellum decorated in gilt, blue endpapers In a slipcase. Fine. One of 26 copies in full vellum (total 115 copies). The leaf is of the continent of Asia and surrounds and is extremely deailed, showing in one corner also "Australis Pars" and in another "Americae Pars."
Gerard Mercator (1512 - 1594) was a Flemish geographer, cartographer and scientific and polymath who studied at Louvain, where he established a geographical center in 1534. The next year he began his famous survey of Flanders, and, in 1538 produced the first of his spectacular series of mapa mundi, based on the Ptolemaic precursers. In 1541 he began globe-making with his terrestrial globe. Almost a decade later he completed his first celestial sphere. Shortly after which he was appointed Chair in cosmography at Duisberg, and in 1544 made a six sheet map of Europe. His first map to use cartographic projection for which is is deservedly famous was in 1568. Mercator began his monumental atlas in 1585; his son completed and published it in 1594. The Atlas comprised the collation of his greatest accomplishments of the last three decades of his life.
