Description
Japanese woodblock print,1923, published by Dai Chikamatsu Zenshu Kankokai, from the series "Woodblock Supplement to the Complete Work of Chikamatsu," a series of 18 prints each by a different artist.,11.5 x 18 inches (overall).
TSUNETOMI KITANO'S art is characterized by his "bijin-ga" (beautiful women) filled with a rich atmosphere of Osaka. His paintings adopt motifs of Osaka centering in areas around Dotombori and Soemoncho, a district referred to as Nanchi (southern area) famous for Kabuki theaters and traditional restaurants. With an atmosphere very different from that of Kyoto or Tokyo, one would find there a spirit of a long lived gay area going back to the Edo period. Tsunetomi favored such motifs in quest of nurturing his artistic career.
