A FRENCH SECOND EMPIRE VENEERED FIGURED WALNUT MARBLE TOP SECRÉTAIRE À ABATTANT, CIRCA 1850-1870, the mottled black rectangular marble top over a cavetto carved frieze drawer centering a foliate twist and wreath ormolu mounted escutcheon, above a quadruple book matched fall front door centering an adorsed swan lyre-form ormolu escutcheon, opening to an interior fitted with an arrangement of a long drawer over a large cubby hole, above two drawers, over four short drawers, one with ink compartments, centering a single drawer, above an inset gilt tooled black leather writing surface, over three like bookmatched drawers, all centering mounted adorsed flower bloom ormolu mounts and knob pulls, on a wide stepped plinth base, raised on tapered curved feet. Height: 58 3/4" Width: 39" Depth: 19"

A later added drawer now occupies the central cubby. There are some humidity cracks on the side panels, some mild bubbling and cracks along the grain of the veneer, as awell as surface scratches and wear throughout. There are some veneer losses near the lower corners of the fall front door and at base, but otherwise in good to very good condition, wear commensurate with age and use.
