Description
English, late 18th century. A japanned Queen Anne tabletop secretary, lacquered black with gilt painted chinoiserie motifs, having an adjustable mirror over a slant front desk, opening to reveal interior storage compartments and drawers, over a single serpentine drawer, lacquered in red with compartmental storage. Apparently unmarked. Approximate height 37.5", width 17.75", depth 13.5".
Condition
Wear commensurate with age and use. Crest with old repairs - appears to have cracked or broken, and has been repaired and filled, with canvas backing. Old repair - does not fluoresce. Areas of loss to gesso. Seam separation - frame is lifting. Worming with loss to mirror frame. Mirror appears to be an old replacement with application of old epoxy and gesso fill. General cracking, lifting, and losses to gesso and surface. Losses to corners, feet, and base. No other visible signs of damage or repair.
