JoaquÃn Torres GarcÃa (Montevideo, July 28, 1874 - August 8, 1949) was an outstanding painter, teacher, writer, sculptor and theoretician of Uruguayan art. Creator of Constructive Universalism and Taller Torres GarcÃa, one of the main artistic movements of his country. His work admits a formal, plastic and semantic reading of metaphysical nature. He organizes geometric forms on a mystical idea of proportion and order, in which he includes numerous universal symbols. Part of his work, as well as manuscripts and correspondence can be found in the Torres GarcÃa Museum and in the Archivo Alejandra, Aurelio and Claudio Torres. His paintings include important collections of Latin American art such as the MALBA or the Cisneros Collection.19 He is also represented in the MNAV21 and in numerous museums in the region and the world, in some of whose websites are reproductions of his works.
