Description
Indenture. The land involved was used to build the Union School (in Whitemarsh Township, Fort Washington section, then part of Philadelphia County and now part of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania). The Union School has been called the “cradle of free education.” It was one of the earliest public schools in Pennsylvania, and the first that did not discriminate based on social position. Deed is dated Jan. 30, 1773 at beginning of text. Docketing on the verso is dated Mar. 12, 1773, and signed by Archibald M’Clean (one of the Justices of the Peace for Philadelphia County). Sheet 24 x 21 in. Ink faded (affecting legibility of some areas). Vellum has some wrinkling and color change, minor spotting. Both sides under glass. Buyer must pick the item up in person or make arrangements with a third party shipper.
