Japanese Daisho Pair of Dragons Sword Tsuba, 18th C

Item Details

Description

Late 18th to early 19th century iron daisho set of 2 Japanese sword tsuba, both with pierced decoration of two dragons contesting the Precious Pearl. Daisho literally translates as DAI (large) and SHO (small) and can refer to any set of blades, koshirae, tsuba or other fittings which were made by the same maker or by the same school. The use of daisho swords began sometime in the Muromachi period and could have included any pair of swords with similar fittings: tachi and tanto, tachi and uchikatana, katana and tanto or katana and wakizashi. Nicely designed pieces, traces of gilding on the smaller tsuba, in very good condition. Come in fitted box with silk pads. Height of the larger 2 3/4 inches, height of the smaller 2 7/16 inches.
