Description
FREE-BLOWN SALVER / CAKE STAND, colorless lead glass, plate with a galleried rim, raised on an applied hollow hourglass-form stem with concave medial collar, and a domed foot with folded edge and rough pontil mark. Pittsburgh, probably Bakewell, Pears & Co., Pittsburgh, PA. 1850-1875. 7 1/2" H, 10 1/4" D rim, 5 3/4" D foot.
Excellent condition, very light chip to interior of foot, several short scratches to plate and scattered wear to top of foot.
Literature: The Bakewell, Pears & Co. trade catalogue of 1868, plate 11, illustrates a salver of identical form. The catalogue's accompanying price list includes free-blown salvers in 12 different sizes, from 6 inches to 16 inches, in addition to an 18 inch version.
Provenance: From a California private collection.
