Item Details
Description
FREE-BLOWN MARBRIE-DECORATED BELLOWS BOTTLE WHIMSY, deep ruby with four groups of opal loopings, body with applied colorless rigaree decorations and two lower handles, and tall neck with gauffered two-spout mouth, raised on a baluster-form stem and thick stepped circular foot with rough pontil mark. All colorless elements exhibit a decided gray tint. Possibly Pittsburgh area. 1850-1870. 12 3/4", 3 3/4" D foot.
Small losses to the lower tips of three applied decorative elements, which is normal on this type of object, otherwise undamaged.
Provenance: Collection of the late Roger Lee Gehman, Pittsburgh, PA.
Jeffrey S. Evans & Assoc., 5/22/10, lot 450.
Ex-collection of Ken Lyon, Fisher's Hill, VA.
Ex-collection of the Swank family, Johnstown, PA.
Catalogue Note: According to Ken Lyon, Dr. E. R. Eller, curator of the Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh, attributed this piece to the Pittsburgh area. This attribution is presumably based on the gray cast of the colorless elements and the crude nature of the standard.
Condition
Small losses to the lower tips of three applied decorative elements, which is normal on this type of object, otherwise undamaged.
