Description
ITALY, 18TH CENTURY A fine Italian Baroque carved marble sculpture of a female nude. The woman is modeled seated on a pillow with her legs folded beneath her thighs daintily resting her head on her hand with a kittenish smirk. Her skin was masterfully executed exhibiting naturalistic qualities similar to Bernini's (1598-1680) "Rape of Proserpina". The artist successfully captures the folds of her stomach and voluptuous breasts and sides giving a flesh like appearance to the marble. The woman is adorned with an ornately carved bracelet with hanging circular pendant. The artist successfully emulated the malleability of a pillow capturing impressions and wrinkles. The work is illegibly signed on the back right corner of the pillow. 14" tall by 10 1/2" wide by 9" deep
Condition
Chip to back of toes and repaired. Where signature appears on pillow, marble might have been darkened to expose signature. Otherwise good overall condition.
