Description
Framed Antoine Calbet (French, 1860-1944), hand colored stone lithograph signed in pencil by the artist. Professionally framed and matted. French romantic genre, c. 1900. In frame 22x20x1". Weight 4 pds 8 oz. PROVENANCE: The Estate of a Charleston SC Art Dealer / Gallery Owner. Calbet studied under Michel, Alexandre Cabanel and the genre painter E.A. Marsal. He exhibited on a regular basis from 1880 at the Salon des Artistes Français, of which he became a member. Antoine Calbet was made an officer of the Légion d'Honneur and was awarded medals at Paris Salons in 1891, 1892 and 1893, together with a silver at the Exposition Universelle of 1900. Antoine Calbet was first and foremost a portraitist and genre painter, but he also demonstrated his talent as a watercolorist. He also made a name for himself as an illustrator, and mention should be made of Aphrodite (P. Louys), Madame Neigeon (Emile Zola, 1896), Le Jardin de Bérénice (M. Barrès, 1907), La Femme nue (H. Bataille, 1911), La Pécheresse and La Sandale ailée (H. de Régnier, 1907), Maupassant's Bel Ami and Jean-Jacques Rousseau's Confessions (1933), Paul Verlaine's Fêtes Galantes (Courtly Scenes, 1936) and Des brises qui venaient de Paros by R. Nerys.
