Description
Antique American Priscilla and John Alden Dessert set with the La Francaise and Sterling backstamps c. 1910. The set is white semi-vitreous porcelain with transferware scenes from the Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem "The Courtship Of Miles Standish". The set includes a very hard to find teapot, creamer and 4 dessert plates (one of the plates was made by Sterling). All in good condition - 2 plates with chips to rims. Teapot 9.50" tall, creamer 3.75" tall, plates 8.25". Weight on all 5 pds. PROVENANCE: A Charleston SC Private Estate. The French China Company began in East Liverpool, Ohio in 1898. Moved to Sebring, Ohio on West California Ave, 1901. Became the 'World's Largest Producers of Premium China". Employed 150 people by 1905. Controlled by Oliver Sebring in 1916, and incorporated as the Sebring Manufacturing Corporation, along with Saxon China Company and Strong Manufacturing Company, all controlled by one management, but maintaining individuality. Ruined by the Stock Market Crash of 1929. Stopped production in 1932
