Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Chupicuaro/Morelos, ca. 500 to 100 BCE. A very unusual anthropomorphic redware vessel, its form comprised of a rounded cup with the head of an elderly man with bulging eyes (almond shaped and painted with black irises) surrounded by sunken facial planes, an open mouth that appears to be toothless with incised wrinkles at the corners and a jutting pointy chin, protruding ears and nose, and a wavy coiffure of openwork curls - quite an expressive visage - at one end, his arms and spine modeled upon the vessel below, and a raised tubular spout, perhaps representing an erect penis thought that's debatable, emerging from the opposite end. Size: 6.125" L x 4.5" W x 4.125" H (15.6 cm x 11.4 cm x 10.5 cm)
