Description
Experimental Black Iris glaze vase with carved and painted floral decoration on black clay done by William McDonald in 1900. Marks include the Rookwood logo, which indicates the date, shape S 1574 and Mr. McDonald’s monogram, most of which has been obliterated by a clean drill hole in the center of the bottom. There is fine overall crazing and two tight lines descending from the rim. Height is 12 3/8 inches. Listed in Burt, “2,292 Pieces of Early Rookwood Pottery in the Cincinnati Art Museum in 1916” as item 123 on page 142 listed as McD - gl, gray body, no crz (crazing).”
