Item Details

Description

An old carved wooden mask from the Baule of West Africa. The mask features an elegant and serene face adorned with three tall coiffures and raised tribal scars. The mask edge is decorated with a geometric design carved in relief. Such masks were known as "Mblo" or portrait masks. Mblo performances consist of a succession of dances that escalate in complexity and importance, culminating ultimately in tributes to honor the community's most distinguished member. Individuals honored in this way are depicted by a mask that is conceived of as their artistic double or namesake. The mask measures 14 x 7 inches. The mask will also include a metal display stand.
