Large cotton brocade Jacquard woven textile banner with the bust portrait of Chairman Mao in black, gray tones and white, captioned in red letters "Comrade Mao Tse-Tung" on lower margin. Size: 6'6'' x 4'3'' (198 x 130 cm). Note: Following Mao's death in 1976 his name was depicted in black on tapestries of this type. The red coloring of the text here suggests that this tapestry was manufactured during Mao's lifetime. Also, it has been suggested that this specific portrait textile was both the inspiration and source for Andy Warhol's famous 1972 portrait of the Chinese leader.
