Item Details
Description

Details: 3Pcs This lot consists of three antique belt found with buckle plates which date to circa the late 19th century or later. This lot is from the estate of a well-known and well-respected lifetime Civil War collector in Upstate New York. Worth Auctions will feature scores of antique weapons, paintings, and unusual items.

One belt has a handsome brown or russet leather strap, metal tip with a slot on one end which accepts the tab hook on the rear of the belt plate which hangs on the strap with a simple side slot. The rectangular plate has a raised rim and "US" embossed in an oval on the pebbled face. The reverse of the strap bears 2 different name inscriptions which read "C.W. CAMMACK JR" and partially "Jack Speg...". The strap measures 34" x 1.9" and the plate 3.25" x 2.1".

Second belt is black leather with a plate of the same description. The strap has a leather keeper and closure holes, some clearly hand-punched. It ends in a metal J-hook at one end and the other end has a metal connecting loop with an additional ring that rises above the strap and which connects a leather end piece with metal slotted tip. That metal piece has the numbers "867" stamped on the rear. The strap measures approximately 41.75" x 1.8".

The third belt is made of thinner leather than the other two and was clearly customized for use. One end has metal slot to accept the tab hook on the back of the buckle plate. The belt has an attachment strap sewn on, which ends with a roller buckle and leather keeper, and a vent pin hanging from a loop punched through the leather. There are a couple more places where attachment straps may have been sewn on. The main strap ends with a pair of holes and the remainder of the belt strap is an additional piece that was skillfully sewn together with no overlap. Several more pairs of holes adorn that piece of the strap and the buckle plate is attached to the last of them by means of two teeth hooked to a metal bar running the short length of the plate. The presumably Artillery Regiment plate shows the Federal Eagle facing its left with breast shield, arrows in its right and olive branch in its left talon, flags, cannons and cannon balls, trumpet, musket, and flintlock pistol crossed behind. Between the flag tips are arrayed 13 6-point stars. Strap measures 32" x 2.25" and plate 2.75" x 2.25".
Condition / Notes: These belt show a typical range of normal period wear, age and handling which may include patina, abrasions, rust, flaking or cracks to the leather and soiling. The belt with the Artillery plate is slightly stiff.
