Item Details
Description
Roman Empire, Northern Levant, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A small deep-green translucent free-blown ink well with a dimpled bottom and smooth pontil, a stable base with rounded shoulders rolling into a slightly pinched area at the base of the thick tubular neck, a flared rim with a rounded lip and flattened top, and a rounded mouth opening presumably for excess ink to easily flow back into vessel. A small portion of the original bronze applicator remains inside the inkwell surrounded by an accretion of sediment and possible ancient ink remnants. A fiery display of rainbow iridescence adorns all surfaces of this beautiful example of Roman glasswork. Size: 1.75" W x 2.25" H (4.4 cm x 5.7 cm)
