JACK JOHNSON BOXING POSTER
Large monochrome lithograph poster, 15 3/4" x 19 3/4", a full-body depiction of world champion heavyweight boxer JACK JOHNSON (1878-1946), shirtless and in a fighter's stance, with an American flag tied around his waist as a sash. The title "Champion of the World" appears above Johnson's head, with his name at the bottom of the image. An inset image to Johnson's left depicts the log cabin in which he was born, while a similar image to the right depicts Johnson - an avid automobile enthusiast - at the wheel of his Packard. The poster is marked at the lower left corner as being printed by Brandt & Scheible, with a copyright date of 1909. Johnson won his world heavyweight champion title in December of 1908, and spent the next few years defending his title against various boxers billed as the "Great White Hope". Thus, this poster represents Johnson at the pinnacle of his career. Mounted in a black wood frame, bears slight folds, else very good.
