Description
JAMES MCNEIL WHISTLER
(1834 - 1903) American artist, a portrait painter with a pugnacious attitude best remembered for the portrait of his mother seated in a rocker. Fine signed photograph of his ca. 1866 oil: "Symphony in Grey and Green: The Ocean", 21" X 15 3/8" overall, signed "Whistler" in pencil and adding his delicate "butterfly" paraph beneath. Mat lightly toned, else fine. Double-matted and ready to frame. This painting was one of several seascapes Whistler painted during a visit to Valparaiso, Chile. The influence of Japanese prints on his work is apparent here in the high horizon, the decorative arrangement of bamboo sprays, and the butterfly monogram (Frick Collection).
