FIDEL CASTRO "HIGH LIFE" PHOTO GROUPING
(b. 1927) Cuban revolutionary who led the guerilla campaign against Batista, overthrowing the dictator and replacing him with the first communist government in the Western Hemisphere. Lot of 57 unpublished 4" x 5"color photographs, 10 color slides, and 76 color negatives, all documenting Bulgarian First Secretary TODOR ZHIVKOV's (1911-1998) visit to Cuba, in 1979. Five of the photos and slides document the official ceremony welcoming the Bulgarian delegation to the country, including shots of the crowd and of Castro speaking. The remainder of the collection depicts a fishing trip aboard Castro's yacht, with Castro, Zhivkov, and their respective retinues looking relaxed and chummy. In several photos, Castro is shown holding a spear gun and climbing back aboard after a round of spear fishing. The group is shown inspecting the day's catch in several other shots. Four photos do not show Castro at all, while five negatives showing Castro have not been printed. A fascinating collection of candid photographs of the leader living a very luxurious and un-proletarian lifestyle. These photographs were never published or given to the media. Fine.
