(CHINA) WILLIAM STEWART DISCUSSES A HONG KONG TYPHOON
Justice of the Peace at Hong Kong, one of the earliest European residents of the city. Good content A.L.S., 4pp. 8vo., "Chuek Choo" (Stanley), Hong Kong, Aug. 25, 1844. Stewart discusses a typhoon that has recently passed through, in part: "... I left Victoria last Monday in our schooner for Chuek Choo and had just got in sight of it ... about two miles to leeward when a gale of wind came in very suddenly. I was lying down below when my footmen told me of it (3 Chinamen) ... the first damage done was carrying away my fore topmast ... I made several more tacks for Chuek Choo but the sea was so high & she shipped so much water that it became very difficult to steer her. The Chinamen then told me they thought a Typhoon was coming on..." Signed at the conclusion. Signature rather light, else very good.
