MUTILATED NEW YORK ARTILLERYMAN PHOTO
Carte de visite photograph Pvt. William D. Semans of Co. L,14th NY Heavy Artillery showing the young man in a half-length seated pose. The unfortunate 21 year-old soldier bears a horrific disfiguring scar on the right side of his face. On the verso is an identification, most likely by Semans himself, naming the sitter, his company and regiment, and adding: "Wounded March 25th/65 by a fragment of shell in front of Petersburg". Backstamp by Johnson's, Washington. Semans lived to the age of 79.
