Description
An early European interpretation of the mameluke saber. Mounted entirely in silver, the hilt with integral knucklebow, the langets engraved with a stand of arms including a banner bearing the St. George cross. Mounted with a robust Persian trophy blade. In its leather scabbard with en suite silver mounts. Late 18th-early 19th century. The last image shows a quite similar example of this rare type belonging to Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington is on view at the Wellington Museum, Apsley House, London; it is not included in this lot. Light wear. Overall length 87 cm. Condition III
