Pouteau, a student of Petit and LeDran, became surgeon in chief at l'Hôtel-Dieu de Lyon, where he gained renown for his success in the operation of perineal lithotomy. He was distinctly ahead of his time with his emphasis on the need for cleanliness in hospitals and for proper disposal of soiled dressings. Blake p. 361. Wellcome IV, p. 426.
