The featured alexandrite is set within a diamond bezel supported by elaborate diamond set shoulders, completed by a two millimeter wide band. Trademark is Hana. Identified with markings of "18K". Alexandrite was discovered in the 1830's near the Tokovaya River in the Ural Mountains of Siberian Russia. It later became the national gemstone of Russia. The name "alexandrite" became official in 1842.Alexandrite is a variety of chrysoberyl. It contains both beryllium and chromium. It is the chromium that accounts for the spectacular color change. The color change is the primary qualification for a chrysoberyl to be considered alexandrite. Alexandrite is strongly trichroic.
