Description
Babbage (Charles, mathematician and computer pioneer, 1791-1871) Autograph Letter signed to "My Dear Sir", 1½pp., 4to, Dorset Street, Manchester Square, 7th June 1858, asking him to use his own judgement "I at least shall never urge you", and that they would need to consult books and papers when they meet, and inviting him to visit and "eat a beefsteak with me... My house is undergoing a repair and I have only one habitable room or I would offer you a bed", folds, slightly browned.
⁂ Babbage had a very large circle of friends and acquaintances who were frequent visitors to his house, where they were able to examine and admire the the various examples of the analytical and difference engines. Friends included: Charles William Macready, Sydney Smith, Sir Benjamin Hawes and Dickens.
