Avinash Chandra (1931-1991) is best known for his abstracted yet sexualized representations of the female body, inspired by the tradition of Indian erotic art. Along with F.N. Souza, Avinash Chandra was part of a generation of Indian expatriate artists, who found success in London in the 1960’s. Chandra was the subject of a 1962 BBC television documentary ‘Art of Avinash Chandra’, and was the first Indian British artist to be featured at the Tate Gallery in London, and the first Indian artist to exhibit at Documenta in Kassel. Avinash Chandra’s paintings are included in the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, Tate Gallery and Victoria & Albert Museum, London, Musee d'Art Moderne, Paris, Museum of Modern Art, and other important public and private collections.
