19th century AD. A rectangular mounted plaque with slightly convex face, enamel painted scene of St Tryphon riding a horse with a bird of prey on his wrist; cursive text above. 20 grams, 48mm (2"). Property of a Maida Vale gentleman; acquired in the 1980s. St Tryphon is the patron saint of farmers, gardeners and birds. Enamel icons such as these were produced in Rostov which was famed for the enamel workshops and the items they produced. [No Reserve]
