Description
Published 1887 AD. By Lieutenant-General Pitt Rivers, privately published, Excavations in Cranborne Chase near Rushmore on the Borders of Dorset and Wilts 1881-1885 - Excavations in the Roman-British Village of Woodcuts Common and Roman-British Antiquities in Rushmore Park, with 74 plates (some folding); hardback, blue and gilt pictorial cloth. 3 kg, 32 x 27cm (12 1/2 x 10 1/2"). The lavish volumes by Augustus Henry Lane-Fox Pitt Rivers (1827-1900 AD) on his excavations undertaken around his 32000 acres of Dorset estates (inherited 1880) are famous for their quality and presentation, providing a fine model for presenting the results of archaeological excavations and he is described as being the first scientific archaeologist working in Britain; he also became the first Inspector of Ancient Monuments in 1882. His collection of more than 20000 ethnographic items from across the world formed the basis of the world-famous Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford (founded 1884) and his collection of Wessex artefacts is with the Salisbury Museum.
