The lavish volumes by Augustus Henry Lane-Fox Pitt Rivers (1827-1900 AD) on his excavations undertaken around his 32000 acres of Dorset estates (inherited 1880) are famous for their quality and presentation, providing a fine model for presenting the results of archaeological excavations and he is described as being the first scientific archaeologist working in Britain; he also became the first Inspector of Ancient Monuments in 1882. His collection of more than 20000 ethnographic items from across the world formed the basis of the world-famous Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford (founded 1884) and his collection of Wessex artefacts is with the Salisbury Museum.
