Description
2nd-3rd century AD. A rectangular schist panel depicting scenes from the life of Buddha; to the right three gods watching the Buddha as prince Siddhartha, mounted on a horse leaving the palace, small devata holding horse's hooves to cushion sound; to the centre three female figures, one holding a parasol over the mounted prince, to the centre a female in long robes and headdress leaning on a column, next to her a female in long robes holding a spear; large scene depicting prince Siddhartha in the palace seated on a throne and wearing loin cloth and jewels, his queen to the right, surrounded by female attendants; to the top border a running frieze of feather pattern; mounted on a custom-made stand. 15.7 kg total, 61 x 23cm including stand (24 x 9"). Private collection, North London; acquired in the early 1990s.
