Description
1st-2nd century AD. A pair of gold boat-shaped earrings with the ends narrowing to wire loops; central rib of beaded gold; to one end a collar set with garnet bead. Dr Bonewitz notes: 'The garnets have an orange-red colour, unusual in garnets in jewellery of this period. They are probably spessartine instead of the more usual almandine'. 1.07 grams total, 15mm (3/4"). From a collection of jewellery formed by a London gentleman in the 1970s. [2]
