Description
Late Period, 664-332 BC. A cast bronze statuette of Apis the sacred bull advancing on a rectangular base, solar disk with uraeus between the horns and incised triangle on the brow, to the back a saddle cloth framed by open-winged scarabs, heavy neck with an incised broad collar; mounted on a custom-made stand. 126 grams, 61mm including stand (2 1/2"). Property of a Swiss collector; acquired Galerie Stucker, Berne, December 2011 lot 7502 (part); formerly in a private collection formed before 1980. Apis was worshipped as a manifestation of the Memphite creator god, Ptah.
