Description
Old Kingdom, 2686-2181 BC. A fragment of a limestone frieze depicting a workman, possibly a metal worker, wearing a kilt, seated on a low support or cushion, possibly holding handle to a bellows in his right hand; raised baseline below; jar to the figure's rear with flared and ribbed neck; three ribbed billets above; traces of pigment to the body and hair; mounted on a custom-made stand. Cf. Perrot, G. & Chipiez, C. A History of Art in Ancient Egypt, London, 1883 fig.52 for similar. 2.7 kg, 29cm including stand (11 1/2"). Property of a Connecticut, USA, collector; previously in the collection of Edward Smith, New Jersey, USA; acquired prior to 1980.
