Description
Victor Vasarely (Hungarian/French, 1908-1997), untitled serigraph on foil paper, signed 'Vasarely' in pencil at lower center, numbered 18/150 in pencil at lower left, 1969 CE. A rare, hand signed and numbered limited edition serigraph on foil paper created by Victor Vasarely, a Hungarian-French pioneer of the Op Art movement. As we see in this example which presents dynamic cubes in a palette of black, white, and various greys, Vasarely's compositions take inspiration from geometry and sharp graphics to create optical illusions of spatial depth on a two-dimensional picture plane. His abstract technique is also known as Kineticism and Vasarely was particularly influenced by the Constructivist movement, Bauhaus principles, and Kandinsky's abstraction. The artist was born Vásárhelyi Gyozo on April 9, 1906 in Pécs, Hungary, and initially studied medicine for two years prior to pursuing art. Vasarely studied at the Hungarian branch of the Bauhaus (Muhely) in Budapest in the late 1920s. In 1930 he settled in Paris, where he worked as a graphic artist and refined his signature abstract aesthetic. Vasarely lived and worked in Paris until his death at the ripe age of ninety on March 15, 1997. A wonderful example of Vasarely's oeuvre, in a chrome frame under glass Size: serigraph measures ~ 17.75" L x 12.5" W (45.1 cm x 31.8 cm); framed 18.375" L x 13.25" W (46.7 cm x 33.7 cm)
