Stephan Wewerka (German, 1928-2013), an untitled colored lithograph of five green chairs, 1969, numbered and signed "18/180 SW69" in pencil on lower right. Famous for his whimsical chair sculptures that play with the Bauhaus principle of "functionality" by presenting innovative postures playing with the interstices of form and function, Stephan Wewerka began his deconstructions and reconstructions of chairs, as well as other everyday objects including cutlery, records, and coins in the 1960s. He also made colored etchings inspired by these subjects (many portfolios and single sheets) during this same period, perhaps inspired by his friendship with the Swiss artist Dieter Roth whos is well known for his experimental books and prints. A wonderful work on paper depicting five elegant chairs, all of a similar green hue and minimalist design, differing in the dimensions of their seats as Wewerka playfully stretched this component of his classic chair.
