Description
A rare mid 19th century tripod timepiece compendium.No. 1469, attributed to Thomas Cole for Smith & Sons of Clerkenwell, and retailed by Hunt & Roskell, London. The silvered 6-inch Roman dial with subsidiary seconds at XII, signed above 'HUNT & ROSKELL LONDON, the centre engraved with flowers and strapwork, within cavetto-moulded gilt bezel with an applied shaped apron to the lower edge housing the hand setting arbor, the 8-day movement with deadbeat escapement, wheels of five crossings and divided stepped backplates, the recessed circular base with engraved foliate borders, housing an aneroid barometer with silvered lunette dial reading from 28 to 31 inches of pressure, with arrowhead recording hand, beneath horizontally-mounted Fahrenheit thermometer with silvered scale reading from 50 to 110 degrees with remarks, the frame with spire surmount to hold pendulum wire (vacant) raised on three substantial tubular section supports, the whole on stepped circular anodised base with three screw-threaded hexagonal bolt feet, 20.5in, (51cm). Genera wear to dial (rubbing to engraving and blacking) - retailer's name just legible, some numerals and the subsidiary dial plus tracks all require refreshing.Movement appears sound however plumb bob is missing to cresting and pendulum bob lacks 'feather' and T-bar so has not been tested.General wear to silvered barometer scale, rubbing to anodised base.
