WINSLOW ANDERSON ALFRED UNIVERSITY MONUMENTAL MID-CENTURY BOWL, with an overall teal blue glaze and heavy throwing rings. Incised "Winslow / Anderson /1942" and handwritten note reading "THE LARGEST / BOWL EVER WHEEL THROWN / FROM ONE BALL - 78 LBS - AT ALFRED UNIVERSITY". Winslow Anderson made at New York State College of Ceramics, Alfred, New York. 1942. 20 1/2" D, 8 5/8" H.
1 1/2" chip on base of foot, otherwise undamaged. Manufacturing hairline on base.
Provenance: Winslow Anderson estate sold to benefit the Huntington Museum of Art.
Catalogue Note: While working at Plymouth Pottery, Winslow Anderson was encouraged to apply for the School of Ceramics at Alfred University where he enrolled in 1940. Anderson worked under Shoji Hamada, and likely Minnie Negoro. Winslow Anderson joined the Army during WWII and finished his work at Alfred from 1946-1947.
