Description
ENGLISH LACQUERED CHINOISERIE CABINET ON STAND, having double doors opening to reveal interior drawers, three small drawers over two full-length drawers, over four smaller drawers with two being stacked to center, case with all-over gilt-painted decoration, and some carved decoration to doors, interior drawers with matching gilt-painted decoration, pierced brass hardware, brass corner brackets, possibly later stand with molded waist, cabriole front legs with scroll feet, and squared back legs. Retains a copy of a late 19th/early 20th century photograph showing the present piece in situ. Cabinet 18th century, Stand probably 19th century. 66" H, case 39" x 19" OA.
Good condition overall, doors warped, one more so than the other, some minor scattered wear, losses, and discoloration to decoration. Possible touch-ups to decoration. Minor wear and losses to case. Lacking one brass corner bracket. Old breaks and repairs to rear legs of stand, metal brackets later additions.
Provenance: Property of Virginia Baskett Leach and the late Maurice Derby Leach, Jr., Lexington, VA.
Descended from Kenneth Henry Leach, part of the original furnishings of Horton Grove, Buckinghamshire, England.
Catalogue Note: A 1913 inventory of Kenneth Henry Leach's estate at Oak Hill, Woking, England, includes the following notation in reference to the current lot: "Lacquered Japanese Cabinet on stand." Additional notes on the inventory, in a later hand, indicate that "[t]his is an old possession of the Derby family and was once Booker Derby's taken by his daughter [Frances] Holderness and bought back by Cobbett Derby. Special instructions given both by him and Aunt Caroline that it was never to be parted with." According to family history, the present cabinet on stand originally belonged to Booker Derby (1727-1810) and his wife Caroline Newland who lived at Horton Grove in Buckinghamshire.
