Description
A 1928 German National Football Championship winner's medal awarded to Otto Carlsson of Hamburger SV, in the form of a hallmarked .925 silver-gilt-bronze rectangular plaquette, stamped Stein Nachr, Kiel, the obverse with an Eagle medallion and inscribed DEM DEUTSCHEN FUSSBALLMEISTER, 1928, ALTONA, 29. JULI 1928, 8 by 5cm., in original fitted case In 1928 Hamburger SV won their second German National Championship title following their initial triumph in 1923, see previous lot for further historical information including a biography of Carlsson. In the quarter-final Hamburger SV defeated SpVgg Sulz 07 5-2 before thumping Bayern Munich 8-2 in the semi-final. The Championship Final was very much a home tie as in 1928 it was played in the City of Hamburg at the Altonaer Stadion. A dominant Hamburg team beat Hertha BSC 5-2. Hamburg would not be crowned German champions again until season 1959-60. It is interesting to note that the quality of the German National Football Championship medals had improved markedly when comparing the 1928 and 1923 presentations.
