Babylonian Pottery Plaque - Nergal, Underworld God
Item Details
Description
Near East, Mesopotamian, Babylonian, ca. 2200 to 1550 BCE. A mold-made pottery relief plaque depicting a male deity, possibly Nergal, the war god of the underworld and one of the Babylonian deities mentioned in the Hebrew Bible. He stands with a bold countenance framed by a long beard and curled coiffure, holding an attribute that is difficult to decipher due to the aged surface, but possibly represents Nergal's characteristic scimitar or mace topped by a lion's head, in his hands. Size: 2.375" W x 3.625" H (6 cm x 9.2 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Private Orange, County CA collection acquired between 1990 and 1995
