Description
Georgian Sterling Silver Tea Caddy Spoon by Elizabeth Morley, circa 1798. This lovely spoon is approximately 2 3/4” long, the handle is approximately 1/4 of an inch wide, and the width of the spoon’s bowl is approximately 1 1/4” wide. This piece weighs approximately 7.60 grams, or 0.24 troy ounces. This piece is incredibly well marked. It contains the city mark for London, the maker’s mark for Elizabeth Morley, the letter-date stamp for 1798, as well as the duty mark for King George III.
Elizabeth Morley was a Georgian-era silversmith in London. After her husband, Thomas Morley, past away she took over his business and took charge of the shop. In 1794 she registered as a silversmith with Goldsmith’s Hall, which is quite remarkable for a woman of her time. Elizabeth Morley remained active in the trade until 1807. Tea caddy spoons were used to measure out tea leaves for your perfect cup of tea. This piece can still be put to that use today, or live on your bedside table as a tiny catchall! The possibilities are endless.
