Scarce first British edition. A considerably slimmer volume than the US edition due to the type having been reset and the omission of some illustrations. Just as Edgar Allan Poe's "The Gold-Bug" was known as "The Gold-Beetle" in Victorian England, Chapter 14 has been retitled "Tea and Thunderbeetles" from "Tea and Thunderbugs" in order to accommodate British usage that does not recognize "bug" as a synonym for "insect."

Condition

Jacket price clipped with some wear and soiling, some small chips to edges, dampstaining to bottom of jacket spine and rear panel; Light wear and soiling to cloth, volume bowing a bit; rear hinge starting, 1946 gift inscription on title page; about very good.
