Description:
Title woodblock mounted on thick paper + 10 (of 12) woodcut plates on rice paper, tipped to thick backing paper. With blank sheet of thick paper at rear. Overall approx. 57x40 cm (22½x15¾"), unbound.
Rare, possibly unique publication of these moving woodblock prints, each signed in pencil by the artist, along with a Chinese chop in red, probably her name in Chinese. Though we can find no record of the portfolio, nor of the artist, it would seem likely she was a Russian Jew living in Shanghai, having fled the tumult of pogroms, war and revolution. The prints are a fitting expression of the times, hinting at the sadness and desperation that drew people together.
Condition
Some chipping, wear, and tape repairs backing sheets, the sheet on which the title is mounted is torn in half, title block with edge wear; some foxing to prints, one with a hole evidently from then the paper was formed; fair condition, but the prints very good or better. Sold as is.
