Description:
Color lithographed poster Approx. 265x202 cm (104¼ x79½"), mounted on linen in two vertical sections.
Rare oversized poster featuring the stage magician Carter the Great (Charles Joseph Carter), in one of his featured acts, his "cheating the gallows" trick, where the shrouded magician would vanish as he dropped at the end of a hangman's noose. The act originated in San Francisco, where Carter made his home, and the poster includes a crown of shouting and gesturing Asians, evidently from that city's Chinatown.
Condition
Some flaking and creasing most evident at lower right, 4" strip of adhesion damage at lower right; still very good, a nice, bright example.
