BACKGROUND: NEW YORK, NY.- On Tuesday December 8, 2009 Christie’s Important 20th Century Decorative Art & Design sale offered an entire range of 20th Century Decorative Arts including the largest selection of works to come to by the creative powerhouse couple Francois-Xavier and Claude Lalanne. The 52 works presented in the catalogue were expected to achieve $1.9-$2.9 million (SOLD $5.2 million). Within this group of 52 works is the largest single-owner collection to come to market with 49 prime examples from the Lalannes. François-Xavier and Claude Lalanne, or the Lalannes as they are collectively known, first attracted attention in Paris in the 1960’s, through widely publicized commissions from Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Berge. Their source of imagery was the natural world, with Claude particularly fascinated by the textures and sensual lines of boldly scaled plants and François-Xavier captivated by wild animals. The present selection will offer collectors the opportunity to acquire highly coveted pieces by the Lalannes, which bear their celebrated signature style. Among the highlights are two elegant large-scale works by François-Xavier Lalanne : ‘Grand Wapiti’, a patinated bronze elk designed in 1996 (estimate: $100,000-150,000), and a patinated bronze bear ‘Grande-Ourse’ (estimate: $150,000-250,000), designed in 1994. The collection also contains patinated bronze cheetah, ‘Guepard, Tete de Cote’, from 1994 (estimate: $60,000-80,000). Important 20th Century Decorative Art & Design Sale #2230 - New York, Rockefeller Plaza - 8 December 2009 Sale of Lalanne Works Acheived: $5,194,000 (Almost $5.2 million Usd). ADDITIONAL BACKGROUND: Les C are an artist duo comprising married couple Francois-Xavier Lalanne (1927 2008) and Claude Lalanne (b. 1924). Francois-Xavier Lalanne was born in Agen, France, and received a Jesuit education. At age 18, he moved to Paris and studied sculpture, drawing and painting at Academie Julian. Francois-Xavier rented a studio in Montparnasse, next door to friend Constantin Brancui, after completing mandatory military service. Brancu?i introduced Lalanne to artists such as Max Ernst, Man Ray, Marcel Duchamp, and Jean Tinguely. He met Claude Lalanne at his first gallery show in 1952. The show signified an end of painting for François-Xavier as he and Claude began their career sculpting together. He became known to the larger public in France in 1976 when the singer Serge Gainsbourg selected a work by Lalanne, the man with the head of a cabbage, for the title and cover of an album in 1976. In 1983 he was commissioned by the French Ministry of Culture to design new monumental fountains for the square in front of the Hôtel de Ville, Paris, and also to design gardens for the reconstructed Les Halles in the left of Paris. Claude Lalanne (b. 1924) was born in Paris and studied architecture at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and at the École des Arts Decoratifs. She involved herself in the artist community in Impasse Ronsin, Montparnasse, Paris and became friends with American artists Larry Rivers and Jimmy Metcalf who helped her develop the art of electro-plating. Les Lalanne are represented by Paul Kasmin Gallery in New York City. Source: Wikipedia
